Variation Effect:
All available settings of the 42 variation effect types!

Contents:

Introduction

The following tables contain all available settings for the 42 different variation effect types. The first table contains the common effect parameters for all variation effect types. The other tables contain the available settings of single effects or effect groups with common effect parameters. On the top of each of these tables you'll find the messages to enable the different effect types, below you'll find all adjustable effect parameters.

The Variation parameters 1-10 (F0,43,10,4C,02,01,40,YY,XX,F7 - F0,43,10,4C,02,01,54,YY,XX,F7) are required by the XG specification and should be provided by any XG synth.
The Variation parameters 11-16 (F0,43,10,4C,02,01,70,XX,F7 - F0,43,10,4C,02,01,75,XX,F7) are optional and not required by the XG specification - therefore those parameters appear in grey colour and are marked with 'Optional'. These parameters are provided by the Yamaha MU series (MU 10, 50, 80, 90, 100) and the Yamaha sound cards DB50XG, SW60XG and SW1000XG, but not all XG synths provide them.

Important:
You have to enable the system mode if you want to use the variation effect with several different Parts simultaneously. By XG default the variation effect is in insertion mode and not assigned to any of the 16 Parts - this means, that the variation effect is disabled by default!

If you want to use the variation effect in insertion mode, you have to assign a Part to the variation effect - in this case the variation effect will be available only for the assigned Part. In insertion mode most effect types have one parameter (mentioned in the tables), which can be controlled via MW, BEND, CAT, AC1 or AC2. Like this you could change the speed of the 'Rotary Speaker' or use 'Auto Wah' as a 'Pedal Wah' in realtime. You have to enable the 'Control Depth' for the controller of your choice, if you want to use this feature. By XG default all of these controllers are disabled (value=40h). The control numbers for AC1 and AC2 correspond to the settings for AC1 and AC2 of the assigned Part.

The Yamaha SW60XG (the MU10 too as I know) provides two additional variation effect types: Pitch Shift and Voice Cancel.
The available effect settings for these two effects you can find at my page SW60XG Special.
The Yamaha synths MU80, MU90, MU100 und SW1000XG also provide several additional variation effect types, which don't appear at this page. Perhaps I'll add information to those effect types in future.

Effect parameters are 'Non realtime messages' - changing them during processing any effect will cause unexpected sound results. You should change these settings only at the beginning of a song or during a break of at least 0.5 seconds, when no sound is created by the Variation effect. Only the already mentioned parameter, which can be controlled by AC1 etc. can be changed during playback.

You can paste the SyEx strings directly from this page into your sequencer program, but you'll need to replace the variables XX or YY,XX with valid hexadecimal values. In column 'Data Range' you can find the valid data range for each parameter. For some effect parameters (for example EQ frequency, reverb time, delay time, LFO frequency...) reference tables are available - such parameters can be adjusted accurately. The links in the right column will lead you directly to the referring table of my page Reference Tables.
At Chapter 11 of my page 'Reference Tables' I've described how to calculate the values for those effect parameters which need two MIDI bytes (YY,XX) for data entry.
